Malcolm Turnbull's done the PM thing, so what now?

We're now at the end of week three of the eight-week federal election campaign, and all the body language I see from Turnbull is the same as he has displayed for the last few months beforehand: He looks bored with the Prime Ministership. That "ok I've done this Prime Minister thing, what's next?" languidness.

A nil-all draw where everyone loses: The NSW election

It feels like it has been such a long time coming, but we're now one week away from the end of a four-year fixed term marking the general election for the New South Wales parliament. The obvious, the necessary, will happen - the Australian Labor Party will be hurled out of office, and for the most part obliterated. This is good. By virtue of this, the Liberal and National Parties will be elevated to government with many fresh faces and a whacking big majority. This is not necessarily so good.

Building Bridges, with Warren Truss

Welcome to the premiere of Sky News Australia's kinder, gentler, interactive political talk show and weekly engineering tutorial all wrapped in one, "Building Bridges with Warren Truss".

This week's special guests:

Tony Abbott.

"we will hold them ferociously to account because that is what the Australian people will expect of us." *

Barnaby Joyce.

I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy

"I know what it's like to be very short of money. I know what it's like to live in rented flats. I know what it's like to grow up with a single parent, with no support other than a devoted and loyal father." And with that, the Honourable Member for Wentworth, 20th century internet millionaire, barista barrister, BRW rich lister and merchant banker Malcolm Bligh Turnbull announced to the plebeians that he is just One Of Us.

End of a fool

Make no mistake, Brendan Nelson has been a brave man. He took over the leadership of the Liberal Party last November when it was at a low ebb. It had been decimated in the federal election, the previous leader had lost his own seat, and the man many thought to be the natural successor (Peter Costello) wanted to move on. It was Dr Nelson's task to rebuild the party's stocks and to make it a competitive policy force for the future.

How to upstage a book launch

Breaking news, as His Haplessness The Good Doctor Nelson calls a leadership spill. The parliamentary Liberal Party will vote tomorrow morning, shortly before the Honourable Member for Higgins gives a national-televised book launch on the non-commercial national broadcaster.

What do Brendan Nelson and Billy Hughes have in common?

Billy Hughes was the Honourable Member for Bradfield from 1949 to 1952.

Brendan Nelson has been the Honourable Member for Bradfield since 1996.

Billy Hughes was a member of the Australian Labor Party before switching to the conservatives.

Brendan Nelson was a member of the Australian Labor Party before switching to the conservatives.

Billy Hughes was leader of the Australian Party until it was wound up, and leader of the United Australia Party shortly before it was wound up.

Brendan Nelson is leader of the Liberal Party... for now.

Amazing coincidence besets Liberal Party

In an astonishing set of coincidences, political advertisements placed in three Tasmanian newspapers early in 2006 condemning the Greens on behalf of the Exclusive Brethren were recorded as being paid for out of Liberal Party electoral accounts.

Three separate and entirely unrelated "administrative bungles" at the Hobart Mercury, Launceston Advocate and Devonport Examiner caused sales records to give the totally and utterly absurd impression that the Liberal Party was colluding with the Brethren.

Liberals pass motion for Qld crocodile cull

Liberals pass motion for Qld crocodile cull - The Queensland Liberals have called for crocodiles to be culled because people are being eaten. [ABC Environment]

The choice quote comes from convention delegate Brett Blade, who is reported as saying:

"You can't allow crocodiles to come into the main street of Cairns and eat people - and that is exactly what's happening"

Au contraire Brett, I think they should close one lane of the Cairns main street to traffic for the exclusive use of crocodiles.
